This handbook is the result of my efforts, over nearly fifty years, to identify a multitude of minerals. I am enthralled with the natural beauty of crystals. The infinite number of colors is utterly fascinating. The mathematical relationships of faces, forms and systems intrigues me. But, I have a terrible memory for sight identification. With more than 4000 minerals currently named, the two hundred or so that most dedicated collectors can identify on sight leaves a very large number by which to be confounded. This handbook is for the collector who is intent on learning techniques for determining the identity of mineral specimen.
